Final Fantasy Friday: Traveling Music

A Final Fantasy (et al) post to welcome you to the glory of Friday (if you don’t have weekends off then may this hopefully brighten the midst of your work week) with more located here!

I was going to just do a “What’s your favorite airship?” which is a perfectly adequate question that I intend to answer, too, but I also started pondering the airship music, and I think it’s a good addition to ask.

Favorite airship…well the Invincible from Final Fantasy IX is pretty bad ass, though there is that annoying detail about how it *spoiler* destroyed Dagger’s entire village and was partially responsible for her mother’s death. *end spoiler*  It also has that creepy eye that would be absolutely horrifying to see above you,

*shits self immediately*

but it is a technological marvel.  If I were going into battle, the Invincible is the ship I’d want.

Also the ship can travel between dimensions.

Hm.  I wonder if the red “eye” on the airship is somehow tied to the red light in Garland’s chest…

I had to listen to all of the airship themes, and I enjoyed many of them (including Final Fantasy VI’s “Searching for Friends,” the theme for the World of Ruin), but only one gave me chills, and that’s none other than Final Fantasy VII’s “Highwind Takes to the Skies.”  It’s a rehashing of Cloud’s Theme, which is also the Main Theme, and what better song for flying than one based on Cloud :p

What’s your favorite airship and airship theme?  Let’s discuss in the comments!

  1. I’ve never paid a lot of attention to the music that accompanies travel specifically by airship, but I can say quite solidly that I love the boat music from the original FF! It took me completely off guard when I played it the first time because it’s so happy!

  2. Unfortunately, I have to say the FFXIII Trilogy is mostly lacking in the airship department. My favourite airship journey theme is the one from FFIV when you get the Lunar Whale. It’s so upbeat plus it’s stuck in my head since I’m still sort of “now playing” the game. I’d say my favourite airship experience is the fight with Sin from FFX. It was so epic to finally face that thing head on!

    1. No airship? I’m sure there’s a reason for that that’s story related/spoilerific so I won’t pry. The Lunar Whale music is really upbeat. It makes me think that humans could actually get to space. It’s funny that that ship has a crystal (and it looks like a dark crystal), too. I kind of made it my head canon that that was how it was able to make to from the blue planet to the moon so quickly.

X’s airship is pretty awesome. I remember having to fight that holy worm Evrae? I think that’s what its name was, and it totally destroyed me the first time I faced it.

      1. There are some minor airship shenanigans in XIII, but I can’t say anything else, haha.

Going to the moon on that thing felt so awesome! The music on the moon is really mystical too by the way. I think I might try to finish off FF IV in the very near future 🙂

I remember that fight! I also remember Braska’s Final Aeon kicking my ass, a lot, near the end of the game, haha.

  3. Ooh, I have to admit that this is hard one for me to answer. All of the airship themes blend together for me and it’s difficult for me to tell them apart. I do like Setzer’s theme, if that counts as the airship music. And VII’s airship version of the main theme is also good! As for which airship is best, I’m going to go out there and say that I like the Gullwings’ ship. That’s an airship, right? Haha. In fact, I strangely like the poppy tunes that play in X-2’s airship, oddly enough, even though I’m not a big fan of its music in general.

    1. I had to go to YouTube to listen to them all hehe (I cheated). Setzer’s Theme definitely counts! Have you heard the Grand Finale version of it? It seems to be a very popular airship song, but I did really like VII’s airship theme and how it modified Cloud’s Theme, which is very appropriate (“cloud” and all). His leitmotif always put me in the mind of a leaf floating on the wind anyway. Oddly, I used to not like that song that much, but it grew on me, and I often catch myself whistling it.

I don’t know that airship! Which game is it from? I haven’t played X-2 yet, so I’m woefully ignorant of this part of the conversation :O

      1. Ah yes, sorry, it is from X-2. The music is not that epic in that game. Most of it is some riff on techno, pop, or jazz tunes. But there are some songs I liked despite that, like the Gullwings’ airship theme. Also, it’s probably fine that you haven’t played FFX-2. You’re not missing too much, I’d say. 😉

      2. I first played it on the PS2, but it took the HD remake on PS3 to finally get me to finish it. It’s ok for an RPG, but not at quite the standard that I hold most FF games to. I will admit to liking the Dresspheres because it was essentially the return of the job system. Also, it has ATB, so it actually had elements that were more “traditional” compared to FFX’s CTB system.
