The State of the Gamer: 1/10/17

<–The State of the Gamer: 1/3/17          The State of the Gamer: 1/17/17–>

A weekly post updated every Tuesday detailing my current gaming projects.  I have quite a backlog of games to either play or watch, and I’m hoping a weekly article will assist with my progress as my other accountable posts have done with reading and writing.
I have an account at Grouvee, which is a essentially Goodreads for gamers, so please feel free to friend me there!

Slacking gamer is still slacking.  I’m so far behind in everything that each spare moment is pretty well taken up with catch up…and sleeping.  I’ve also been exhausted.  It’s annoying.  I’d get way more done if I didn’t need to nap all the time like a toddler *grumble*

Title: Final Fantasy IV

I promised myself that I’d play a bit of this last week.  That is another promise broken.  Alas.  This would be the easier one to play between it and DoS since I’m not attempting to cash grind for tens of thousands of gil.  I’m pretty familiar with the Lodestone Cave (I think that’s what it’s called), too, so I could knock it and the Dark Elf out fairly quickly.  Maybe I’ll start putting this and DoS on my day planner/to-do list.  There’s a much higher chance they’ll happen if they’re there.

Title: World of Final Fantasy

Genre: RPG – Fantasy

So without getting spoilery, I reached a part of the game that at least touched the fourth wall.  One of the twins is genre savvy, and I love things like that.  I could probably also argue for meta, but I’ll discuss that more when I review it.  Suffice it to say I’m at the beginning of the end, and with Final Fantasy often the end mimics the beginning.

I had to stop playing last night right before I plunged into the next part, because it was late, and I know it’s going to be quite involved.  Tomorrow is Wednesday though; I have the house to myself, and WOFF is all I’m going to do after post the SOTR.

Title: Mass Effect II
Series: Mass Effect
Genre: Action RPG – Sci-Fi
Developer: BioWare
Original Platform(s): Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3
Original Release Date: January 26, 2010
Let’s Player: Olizandri
Date Started: November 19, 2016

Shepherd ran into Wrex, and I could only be happier if he’d been able to re-join her on the quest to save the galaxy.  He has other responsibilities now though, so I understand.  I like that both Mordin’s and Grunt’s loyalty missions on on Tuchunka, and Olizandri, the let’s player, had Shepherd initiate a pretty in depth conversation with the salarian scientist about the genophage.  It is not remotely a black and white issue.  While the majority of the galaxy sympathizes with the krogan, the reasons behind the bio-weapon are understandable, and while I can’t condone such “germ” warfare, it did serve its purpose in stemming the tide of the war.  It’s kind of like Song’s Red Wedding.  As terrible and traitorous as it was, it did succeed in stopping the war, and bringing an end to the Northern aggression (huh…now that’s interesting.  In Martin’s epic, the South wins the civil war.  I wonder if he did that on purpose…), which undoubtedly saved many lives even as it extinguished all the (known) denizens of House Stark.  This doesn’t mean it wasn’t a terrible injustice, nor does it mean I’m a proponent of “ends justify the means” thinking, but both the Red Wedding and the genophage are morally grey issues.

Title: Miracle Warriors: Seal of the Dark Lord
Genre: RPG
Developer: Kogado Software Products
Original Platform(s): Sega
Original Release Date: October 18, 1987
Let’s Player: Hungry Goriya

Both the senpi and the hanj(sp?) went down before the miracle warriors’ mighty, sacred nuts!  “Notice me senp(a)i?”  No, don’t notice me (I’m sorry…I had to).  The fourth companion has been located, and I’m assuming soon the Dark Lord will be faced and his seal broken.  I think I saw the 10th video go up today, so I’ll be watching that tonight!

Games Added to Playlist: 1

  1. Bravely Second: End Layer – I had no idea there was a sequel to Bravely Default, so I have to thank The Otaku Judge for showing me the error of my ways.  Granted, I haven’t played the first one yet (nor do I own the system in which to do so.  Semantics…), but I still like to keep informed, especially when it comes to Squeenix.  At least I know what to ask for for my birthday.

Games Bought This Week: 0

What are you currently playing and/or watching? Is it something new or old?  Is it a first time run or a replay?  What’s the genre?  Would you recommend it?  What’s on your radar to play next?

  1. I’m looking forward to your World of Final Fantasy review! Sometimes it’s easier to slack on a few of your juggled games and just focus on one, which seems to be the case here lol.

Now that I’ve finished Fire Emblem: Awakening, I’ve gone back to Persona Q. I just beat the Evil Spirit Club dungeon and have one more to go. I love this game to death!

    …but

…watching AGDQ 2017 has gotten in the way of gaming. It’s a yearly speedrun marathon that goes on for a whole week, 24/7, where some of the best speedrunners in the world plow through a bunch of games for charity. It’s a great cause and I get sucked in to it every year in January and May/June.

I also picked up some comics from the library to read when they speedrun a game I don’t care about. Grabbed volume 1 of Monsters, 3 volumes of THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, and 3 volumes of The FADE OUT. Very excited about those.

    Enjoy your week!

    1. I was able to play a bit of the handhelds while still keeping up with WOFF. I gave up entirely on any attempt at starting FFV. That’s not going to happen lol. I was thinking that WOFF would be a sort of side project. Oh my goodness no.

Oooh AGDQ sounds fun! Where do you watch it? I’ve seen a few speedruns of the original SMB, which is absolutely amazing. Under five minutes. Like how even? I usually prefer the really long LPs were the player gets everything, but I do like witnessing the skill it takes to finish a game in less than five minutes or so.

I have Monstress on my list! That, Saga, and Locke and Key are recent adds, and I own the last two. If I wasn’t reading five books now, I’d probably fit Saga in, but I opened the latest Kindle purchase on my new one, and it’s tied to Goodreads. It told me I was reading another book, and I just kind of went with it. It’s actually pretty easy to get a chapter of the two books I’m going through on there done at lunchtime, and my job kind of doesn’t care if I snatch a few pages or two while I’m working. So long as my work gets done, they’re pretty chill about it.

Good luck with the start of the new semester!

      1. twitch.tv/gamesdonequick I believe! They’re doing a Mario block right now where they’re speedrunning Lost Levels and Mario Sunshine, then the original Final Fantasy! So it’s a good time to jump on (and hide the chat, because FUCK THATTTT).

      2. I saw they’re on Lost Levels! I was only there for a bit since I’ve lost some multitask ability points since I left school.

Omg that chat was ridiculous. I couldn’t even see what the hell was going on because over 100k people were watching LMAO.

  2. I have to beat Bravely Second too! I love it so far though, and you would too if you enjoyed the first! I remember seeing a fourth-wall break early on in World of Final Fantasy, and since you’re much further than me, I look forward to seeing what the break is! I’ve been playing a lot of Pokemon Moon this week, mostly while watching the Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ) week-long speedrun marathon that comes twice a year. I’ve seen so many good runs and races this week so far!

    1. I didn’t even know it existed! I haven’t played the first yet, and I really need to invest in a 3DS so I can.

I think Cheap Boss Attack was talking about AGDQ, too! I watched a little bit of it yesterday (I think). They were doing Mario The Lost Levels. How is Pokemon Moon?

      1. I love AGDQ so much! I watch the speedruns every year! Pokemon Moon is still awesome! I wrote a review basically gushing about how it’s the best Pokemon generation in a while. That’s probably why I’m still playing it months after its release haha

    1. I’m in the same boat with FFIV. Poor Cecil is still waiting outside of Troia, wishing for monsters to vanquish. I hope you get more time to play! I spent about 6 hours or so on World, and I stopped right before what I believe will be a pivotal part. I’m fairly close to the end, and hoping to maybe finish before the end of this month. I’m off on Monday, which will be spent probably entirely gaming 😀
