Question of the Week: 9/25/16

The Question of the Week is posted every Sunday and will consist of a question followed by my answer and explanation to the same.  Some questions will only require a simple answer that could potentially be followed by an explanation.  Many questions will be writer oriented, but not all.  Everyone is encouraged to answer in the comments and discussions/follow up questions are more than welcome!

What’s your favorite type of pie?

I had the “What’s your favorite type of cake?” question back in July, and I just recently had ice cream cake since last Friday was a coworkers last day, and my job is keen on having good send offs.  Not everyone likes traditional cake (case in point the now former coworker in question), which is why why went with ice cream.  Pie is more associated with autumn whose equinox has just passed so I thought this an appropriate question.

My favorite type is simple “all American” apple, quotes because apple pie actually predates America despite the popular saying.

I’m especially partial to the crumble variety, but there’s a French version called tarte aux pommes that I’d love to try one day.

Unfortunately, my preliminary search only locates recipes in French, but I’m sure if I’d be able to find one or an adequate translation of the same.

I also enjoy cherry, peach, lemon (not so much meringue), and other fruit pies.  I didn’t have pumpkin pie until I was well into my twenties, but grew up eating my grandmother’s sweet potato pie, though I’ve never been overly fond of that either.  Pumpkin pie is a less sweet version of sweet potato to my taste buds, and to be honest, neither one is my favorite.  I much prefer fruit pies, and apple is at the top of my list.

What’s your favorite type of pie?  Is it a fruit pie or more savory?  Do you prefer non-dessert pies e.g. chicken pot or mincemeat?

    I think my personal favorite pie would either be banana cream pie (the way my grandma made it/mom currently makes it) or pumpkin pie.
    That is so nice that your job makes the effort to send employees off in a way that shows they care. 🙂
    I made an ice cream pie recently for a work potluck and it was surprisingly easy and delicious. I’m really starting to dig making no-bake desserts more and more.

  2. Strawberry rhubarb pie or bumbleberry pie are some of my favourites, though I’m with you about all fruit pies. There are no bad ones!

    I’m also a huge fan of meat pie. It used to be a Christmas Eve tradition with some of my family so I have great memories of that from my childhood. Over the years I’ve grown partial to meat pie with potatoes, carrots and celery mixed in. We usually keep one in the freezer for a last-minute meal if we don’t feel like cooking some nights!

  3. I’ve never heard of bumbleberry pie! What’s that like? I love strawberry pie, too in both hot and cold varieties.

    A pie with meat and potatoes sounds delicious. Om nom, I’m a fan of the crust mixed with savory. That’s a great tradition and yes, prepping and freezing things is the way to live. I’m terrible at making dinner (thankfully my husband likes the process of cooking; I’m more of a means to an end person), and much prefer easier meals.

  4. Omg really?? I’m shocked hehe. You’re in the right season for it, though with every coming in a can, you can have pumpkin whenever the hell you want! Granted it will be inferior. Do you put whipped cream or anything on top or just eat it with it’s pumpkinny goodness?

  5. All this talk of pie makes me want to make more pie! Thank goodness the apple harvests are coming!

    Bumbleberry is a mishmash of different berries and differs depending on where you get it. My favourite is from Costco. I’ve had it with a mix of strawberry, blueberry and raspberry with rhubarb (and occasionally saskatoon berries for an extra treat!)

    Pie crust is the bane of my existence. It’s a pain, but it’s worth it even if at the end it’s just a mosaic of different dough pieces “glued” together with water. Sigh. One of these days I’ll get it! And I hear you on not liking the cooking thing too much. My boyfriend is a kitchen guru. I’m a quiet spectator and a master of soups and dips!

  6. My GF recently turned me on to sweet potato pie, which is so damn good. I love pumpkin pie, and while sweet potato pie tastes similar, it’s a lot less spice intensive and a hell of a lot smoother. Sooooooooo gooooood.

  7. Well I made two in the past month! One was this cake batter fudge that’s exactly what it says on the tin in using cake better mix.

    Then I made this red velvet fudge that was okay. The recipe was a bit confusing. Initially it called for two sticks of butter, then it says half when you click on it. Two sticks was WAY too much though since the excess rose to the top when I refrigerated it, but it was still pretty good. I preferred the cake batter though. I’m more of a vanilla fudge fan. This uses red velvet cake mix.

    Actually I have a bunch on my Pinterest (where I pulled those two from) that I’ve yet to try, but want to. That candy cane fudge might be happening around Christmas lol, and there’s a candy corn fudge, too, which may be a bit too sweet even for my sugary tooth.

  8. Ah you would’ve loved my grandmothers! That’s pretty much what she did all the time. That may be why I’m not that big of a fan of it anymore, because there’s just no comparison. I’ve also had a combination of sweet potato and pumpkin. It’s…interesting. Not bad, but I’m just more of a fruit pie person.


  9. I really need to get a Costco membership. They have the best cakes, too. The icing is the good kind (I’m a buttercream type of girl) and they have this pudding in the center of it. I would totally try that kind of pie!

    Ugh, I was JUST talking about how much I hate pie crusts lol. If I can get it premade it’s so much better though I’ve gotten a bit more adept in making it. If you mix it literally in the pie pan using a fork, and then work it from there, it’s much easier. I can’t help you with the top crust lol. Those are such a pain.

    I like baking to satisfy my sweet tooth :p

  10. Wawa (this convenience store that’s kind of a rival to Dunkin Donuts) has this pumpkin spice coffee that’s pretty amazing, and I’m not averse to the flavor! They make this creamer for it so even if you don’t have pumpkin spice coffee, you can still have the flavor lol.

    Mmm blueberry. Now I definitely want some crumbly top pie.
